A long read · about 14 minutes · with the full text of John 8 woven throughout
God works in mysterious ways. This is the story of how the Iran war has, of all things, brought together the spiritual children of Abraham — and how an unlikely figure, President Donald Trump, is trying to get every one of them to make Father Abraham happy.
I don’t think Trump fully realizes what he is doing. Unless he is up late while Melania sleeps, praying and reading the Old Testament, texting Netanyahu about how much he loves the Torah and how he should really get to part two — we call it the New Testament.
Okay, you got me. That’s highly unlikely. So God surely does work in mysterious ways. Because when I started researching this, it blew me away to find why Trump is using the Abraham Accords to reach for lasting peace in the Middle East — in the middle of a bitter war that caps off decades of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s deep-seated religious hatred of Israel. Going back to 1948 and the birth of the modern Jewish state, we are looking at three-quarters of a century of war or hostility between Israel and nearly everyone in its neighborhood — across Asia, Africa and Europe. More than twenty nations.
Donald Trump is doing something that even many Christians have not figured out: the Bible is the key to our deepest problems. Here I share what I see spiritually as America and Israel go to war with Iran.
Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I Am!”
It’s remarkable what just happened, and what is happening in general. We are coming to the end of what I’d call the age of the Gentiles. The Jews, in a sense, gave up their birthright to the Christians through disobedience and through their rejection of Christ. Fast forward to modern times, and the Jews and the Christian Gentiles are fighting side by side — both children of Abraham, of a different stripe. The Jews from the bloodline of Abraham, and the American Christians from the spiritual bloodline of Abraham.
The Jews in Israel were born of the seed of Abraham. America was built largely by Christians who fled Europe for the freedom to worship Christ. And the Bible speaks of both: the Jews as the physical seed of Abraham, and believers as the spiritual seed. Hold that thought — it’s the whole key to this piece.
A Memorial Day Peace Plan: Trump Reaches for the Accords
This Memorial Day weekend, President Trump proposed an end to the Iran conflict with one intriguing possibility: expanding the 2020 Abraham Accords to Iran and other Arab and Muslim nations. A major step toward peace in the Middle East — and, quite frankly, the world. Over the weekend he spoke with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain, then took to social media to say the signing should be “mandatory” as part of any deal.
For most of modern history Israel had peace treaties with exactly two Arab neighbors — Egypt (1979) and Jordan (1994). The Accords cracked that open. Even for a God-believing Christian like me, I have to admit: Trump might have more faith in God and in human beings than I do in some ways. That’s a challenge and a lesson to me — have more faith, and give it a try. And it makes me think hard about what all of this means. It is breathtaking.
The Last Scene: The Major Characters Take the Stage
Across the world — Asia, Europe, Africa, South America — Jews, Christians and other Gentiles are in upheaval. The horror of wars and rumors of war is on our front page every single day. I picture the actors walking on stage for the last epic scene of a play. And I have come to believe, to know, and to see that President Donald Trump is one of those prophetic figures — the kind most people would never guess.
I don’t think he’s a Christian. But he’s representing a Christian nation that is standing beside the children of Abraham in Israel — who are fighting against Iran, which also claims a spiritual lineage from Abraham. This hit me while I was writing: I believe God is using Donald Trump to speak to the world, and especially to everyone who claims Abraham as their father. The message? Your actions will reveal whether you are truly children of Abraham. You are being challenged, tested, warned. And He is using the Abraham Accords to deliver the message. Let me explain.
39“Our father is Abraham!” they declared. “No,” Jesus replied, “for if you were really the children of Abraham, you would follow his example. 40Instead, you are trying to kill me because I told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing. 41No, you are imitating your real father.”
Trump, America and Israel: The Enigma
An enigma is a person or situation that is mysterious, puzzling, hard to explain — a riddle that won’t resolve neatly. Trump, America and Israel are all three.
Donald Trump, a servant of God?
When Trump ran in 2016, some of his most hardened would-be supporters — people like Glenn Beck and me — were dead set against him. Beck, a Mormon conservative commentator, went on PBS’s Charlie Rose and called him a “sociopath” who couldn’t connect on a human level. He compared him to dictators. Then, at the 2024 Republican Convention, Beck publicly apologized for what he’d said. Like Beck, I went from thinking Trump was dangerous for our country to believing he is being used by God to do His will on the earth.
I do not use that phrase lightly. Third marriage, the swearing, the pride — we’re not hiring a pastor to run the country. And yet here I am saying it about Donald Trump. Yikes. But he has governed pro-God, pro-life, pro-traditional-family. And he has been the best friend Israel could ask for in American history. Please correct me if I’m wrong about that.
A man who fights for Christ, who appears to be used by Christ — yet I’m not sure is a Christian himself. Donald Trump standing shoulder to shoulder with Israel on behalf of God is exactly that kind of riddle.
Is America a Christian nation?
This is a controversial question, and I get why — I waffle on it myself. Yes, we were founded on Christian values. And no, our laws, policies and mindset are largely not Christian any longer. America is an enigma.
But America was built on biblical principles. Don’t take my word for it. Take it from our second president, John Adams, in a 1798 letter to the Massachusetts militia:
Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. — John Adams, October 11, 1798
James Madison, the father of the Constitution, said much the same — that our system requires “sufficient virtue among men for self-government,” warning that without it, “nothing less than the chains of despotism can restrain them from destroying and devouring one another.”
When Joe Biden — a progressive — used the slogan “battle for the soul of the nation,” I actually agreed with the framing, even though I think he stands on the wrong side of it. He and his allies are, in my view, trying to dismantle the foundation of faith that America was built on. Iran, for its part, certainly thinks America is its enemy. I can’t help believing it’s because of what we believe.
The enigma of Israel
The people of Israel are the children of Abraham. Jesus said Abraham would have welcomed His day — yet the religious leaders of Jesus’ day rejected Him. And still, Israel receives the blessings and promises of Abraham. Now the Christian nation that took up the torch is helping protect Israel — led by a non-Christian named Donald Trump.
Now tell me God isn’t real. He will make us rethink our theology. We cannot put God in a box. This is an enigma indeed.
The Islamic Republic of Iran: The Frankenstein
Every good story needs a villain or a serious problem. Iran is that. I’m casting them as Frankenstein’s monster — a creature that uses violence to get what it wants, and that does not fit into our world of free trade and personal freedom. Iran represents the many nations that believe in authoritarian rule by a small circle of leaders. But this isn’t socialist or Leninist ideology. Iran is driven by Islamic religious zeal, presently led by the regime and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The numbers tell the story:
For more than four decades Iran has been the chief exporter of terror — famous for chanting “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” while burning both flags, and for funding proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. That money has cost thousands of civilian lives — including the October 7 massacre, the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Who Are the True Children of Abraham?
Here is the heart of it. So Trump is using the Abraham Accords to tie a bow around a peace deal — playing three-dimensional chess. Through the lens of the Bible, here’s what I see: he is searching for what the nations of this region hold in common. They can’t agree on much, but Jews, Muslims and the Christian nation of America all call Abraham a father. That shared honor sets the table for the Accords.
This is the work of a wise mediator — appealing to people’s best selves rather than their worst instincts. But watch closely: while it opens a door to peace, it also exposes those who aren’t looking for peace. It separates those willing to coexist from those who would rather use war to settle every conflict. The Accords reveal exactly who each of these nations really is.
And in John 8, Jesus tells us precisely how to recognize the true children of Abraham — not by bloodline, but by what they believe and what they do:
31Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33“But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?”
34Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. 35A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. 37Yes, I realize that you are descendants of Abraham. And yet some of you are trying to kill me because there’s no room in your hearts for my message. 38I am telling you what I saw when I was with my Father. But you are following the advice of your father.”
Notice the standard: free isn’t about ancestry, it’s about who sets you free. Descent from Abraham was never the question. The question was whether there was room in their hearts for the truth. Jesus presses harder:
42Jesus told them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me. 43Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It’s because you can’t even hear me! 44For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me!
46Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God.”
That passage holds up a mirror — to Americans, to Muslims across Iran and the region, and even to Israel. This is so prophetic in my eyes. I’m in awe of what God is doing: using Trump as a type of Christ. That doesn’t mean Trump is Christ. It means he is standing in a position that shows us, in action, something of what Christ looks like — the way Joseph in the Old Testament was a type of Christ in his character and his impact. Trump is doing it through his office. And, I’ll add, he’s hit some surprisingly high notes morally along the way.
God used Rahab — a prostitute — to help Israel win the battle of Jericho. She became an Israelite, and Jesus Himself is her descendant. If God can use Rahab, He can use President Trump to reveal the real children of Abraham, and to call the whole region up to a higher standard of living.
That higher standard is the worship modeled by Father Abraham — following the ways of Christ. The Jews are descendants of Abraham through Isaac, yet many rejected Jesus. And many Muslims across the Middle East trace a physical or spiritual lineage to Abraham through Ishmael, Isaac’s half-brother — Islam holds its prophet Muhammad to be a descendant of Ishmael, Abraham’s son through Hagar. I believe the living God is speaking prophetically through these very world events. Who are the real children of Abraham — by the Spirit, not the flesh?
Jesus brings it to a climax with a claim no mere teacher could make:
52The people said, “Now we know you are possessed by a demon. Even Abraham and the prophets died, but you say, ‘Anyone who obeys my teaching will never die!’ 53Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54Jesus answered, “If I want glory for myself, it doesn’t count. But it is my Father who will glorify me. You say, ‘He is our God,’ 55but you don’t even know him. I know him. If I said otherwise, I would be as great a liar as you! But I do know him and obey him. 56Your father Abraham rejoiced as he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad.”
57The people said, “You aren’t even fifty years old. How can you say you have seen Abraham?” 58Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I Am!” 59At that point they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus was hidden from them and left the Temple.
“Before Abraham was even born, I Am.” That is the name of God Himself — and they reached for stones. The same question echoes down to today, to the children of Isaac, of Ishmael, of Abraham: Who are you? And do you receive the Prince of Peace, the Lord of all, Jesus Christ?
Is Trump the New King Cyrus?
I, and others, called Trump a Cyrus figure during his first presidency. So it’s striking — I’d say prophetic — that he would go to war with Iran to help free Israel from the grip of Persian-backed terror, much the way Cyrus the Great freed the Jews from Babylonian captivity.
Here’s the history, and it’s worth getting right because it makes the parallel even stronger. In 586 BC, Babylon destroyed Solomon’s Temple and dragged the Jews into exile. In 539 BC, Cyrus — a Persian king — conquered Babylon (in present-day Iraq) and issued a decree letting the Jews go home and rebuild the Temple. Cyrus did not worship the God of Israel; he was a pagan king. And yet listen to what Scripture says about him — written, astonishingly, more than a century before he was born:
“When I say of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd,’ he will certainly do as I say…” — and God calls him “his anointed one” — the only foreign king in the Bible ever given that title. — paraphrasing Isaiah 44:28 & 45:1
God called Moses His friend, but Cyrus His servant — even His anointed. Moses worshipped God; Cyrus did not. Yet both were used to free God’s people and bring them to the land He promised. Now enter Donald Trump — a man I do not believe is a Christian, but who became the first U.S. president to formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital (December 2017) and to move our embassy there (May 2018, on Israel’s 70th anniversary).
| Cyrus the Great | Donald Trump | |
|---|---|---|
| His faith | A pagan Persian king; did not worship Israel’s God | Not a professing Christian, by the story of his own life |
| What God called him | “My shepherd,” “his anointed” (Isaiah 44:28; 45:1) | A prophetic figure used to shape world events (as I see it) |
| His act for the Jews | Freed them from Babylonian exile; let them rebuild the Temple (539 BC) | First to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital; fought beside Israel against Iran |
| The adversary | Babylon (modern Iraq) | The Islamic Republic of Iran (ancient Persia) |
| The instrument | A decree of release (the Cyrus Cylinder) | The Abraham Accords, plus military pressure |
And here is a detail that gives me chills. Last year’s campaign — the joint Israeli-American strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities — Trump named the “12 Day War.” It ran exactly twelve days, June 13–24, 2025. Israel has twelve tribes. I don’t think the president knew what he was actually saying. But there goes Cyrus again, doing God’s work. Israel even has to fly over Iraq — ancient Babylon — to strike Iran today. The geography itself is a sermon.
For the fun of it: this spring McDonald’s rolled out a new burger in America — the “Big Arch,” launched March 3, 2026 — right as Trump leans on the Abraham Accords against Israel’s arch-enemy. A coincidence, surely. But I notice these things.
God Pointing Back to Abraham in the Iran War
It is genuinely amazing that President Trump invoked the Abraham Accords while pitching peace in the current war with Iran. I believe God is using him to point all the way back to Abraham — to the promise in Genesis where God said, “I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through you.” And that promise lands at the very moment anti-Semitism is rising like never before across the entire world.
Iran sits near the center of that hatred. And it’s strange to watch some American voices — figures I’d put in that camp, like Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens — drift toward rhetoric that, to my ear, echoes the oldest antisemitic tropes, oddly teaming up with anti-Israel voices on the left. Iran curses Israel, and Iran has been cursed: God is using President Trump, like Cyrus, to dismantle Iran’s capabilities and its prestige. It’s a warning to the whole world about how God deals with those who come against His people.
Here’s an interesting nugget to chew on. In April 2017, Russia became the first country to split Jerusalem on paper — recognizing West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital while assigning East Jerusalem to a future Palestinian state. God says in Scripture, in effect, “You divided My land… I will contend with you.” Five years later — February 2022 — Russia marched into Ukraine in what was supposed to be a quick walk-through, and got stuck in the mud, with the whole nation now exposed and at risk.
And according to Bible prophecy, that may only be the beginning. In Ezekiel 38 and 39, a great coalition — which many scholars read as Russia, Iran (Persia) and a host of nations — comes against Israel, only to be destroyed by God Himself. Joel 3 may be describing the same judgment, where God gathers the nations and enters into judgment with them “concerning My land” which they divided up. What we’re watching on our TVs and phones is deeply prophetic. Don’t I know it.
Light Versus Darkness: A Battle on Two Planes
What I see is a war in the Middle East — light and darkness meeting right in the middle of the earth. President Trump was used to push the darkness back across North America and all the way to the Middle East. Picture a man drawing a curtain: it started near Venezuela, and Trump was used to push it back to Iran. No one else had the courage to do that.
As seen from space every day — light on one side of the globe, darkness on the other — the two now meeting right in the middle of the earth.
Meanwhile Europe drifts further into darkness — cracking down on speech, struggling with radicalism. When Europe had the light of Christ, much of it traded that light for progressive humanism. Many Bible scholars believe the old Roman Empire will, in some form, be revived there — and that this is where the Antichrist will eventually seat his power. I can almost see a vision of the globe: light on one half, darkness on the other, a world at war on two planes at once — physical and spiritual — in a struggle for supremacy. It echoes the line in Scripture: “And there was war in heaven…”
Russia, China and a Rising Darkness
This is where it gets personal for me, because I’ve been saying it for years. Back in 2013 I asked whether war was coming between Russia, China and the United States — when almost no one was looking for it.

Fast forward. Trump has turned the geopolitical board upside down with a chest-out, America-first posture — from pressing NATO allies on defense spending, to tariffs, to the race for rare-earth minerals and AI, to confronting adversaries across the Western Hemisphere. And in September 2025, at China’s massive military parade — the first time Xi, Putin and Kim Jong Un appeared together publicly since the Cold War — the president said the quiet part out loud. On Truth Social he signed off to Xi like this:
“Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The United States of America.” — President Donald Trump, on the Beijing parade, September 2025
That lines up with what I’ve been saying all along. Iran has been locked in step with China, Russia and North Korea, and the whole axis is sharpening. I went deeper on this in a related piece — “When I Speak, People Should Listen: War With Russia and China.”
Extreme Peril: The Forces Arrayed for the Final Battles
Here’s the hard part. I believe darkness is going to win this particular war — for a time. The Bible says a one-world government, led by a single world dictator the Scriptures call the Antichrist, will one day rule the earth. We already see Russia rattling nuclear threats and China building its arsenal while eyeing Taiwan. War has ravaged much of the world these last few years, and the authoritarian powers are moving in concert.
We are standing at a pivot point. For a short time, the forces of light will not be able to hold back the dark — until the return of Jesus Christ, when the Light of the world comes to restore light to the whole world. The people of the earth have a choice right now: live in the darkness, or live in the light. Many have already turned away from Christ, the true Light. I believe what we’re witnessing is the last great stand of light, freedom and prosperity on the earth before a season of darkness — and then the return of the King. The wise are preparing for that now: enjoying this season of freedom, and helping others understand what is coming.
A Prophetic Role — and a 2016 Vision
Many people don’t want to admit it, but I believe President Trump has a prophetic role in world events — and we need to be careful with our words here, so let me draw a line. Prophecies are what God has already written in the Bible. The prophetic is how God speaks to us about what’s happening — in the world and in our own lives — often before it happens.
I don’t claim Trump has fulfilled any biblical prophecy. But I do believe his life is being used prophetically: positioning America as Russia and China rise; standing with Israel as a fanatical Iran openly seeks to wipe it off the map. His unparalleled support for Israel makes him look, again and again, like King Cyrus.
And this is where it gets personal. President Trump put his life on the line when they tried to assassinate him — on July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania. I believe that’s part of why God showed me, back in July of 2016, an impression of his assassination. Eight years, almost to the month.

The Bible says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for a friend.” Whatever you make of the man, he put his presidency — and his life — on the line to do what he believed was right for Israel, for America, and for the world. The people of Venezuela, Iran and Cuba get forgotten in all of this, because politics matters more to some onlookers than people do. I’m praying for our president.
The Whole Story, on One Timeline
Step back, and a single pattern stretches across 2,600 years — the same God, using unlikely kings, to deal with His people and the nations around them:
- 586 BCBabylon destroys the First Temple and exiles the Jews.
- 539–538 BCCyrus the Great conquers Babylon and decrees the Jews free to return and rebuild — the pagan king Scripture calls God’s “anointed.”
- 1948Modern Israel is reborn; the United States is the first nation to recognize it.
- 2017Trump recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital; Russia recognizes West Jerusalem and splits the city on paper.
- Sept. 2020The Abraham Accords are signed at the White House.
- July 13, 2024An assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, PA — eight years after my 2016 vision.
- June 2025The “12 Day War”: Israel and the U.S. strike Iran’s nuclear sites.
- Feb. 28, 2026U.S. and Israeli strikes reportedly kill Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.
- May 2026Trump calls on Muslim-majority nations to join the Abraham Accords to end the war.
President Trump, bringing the children of Abraham together to look in the mirror, is truly extraordinary. God is asking the same question He has always asked: Who are the true children of Abraham? Would you please stand up?
I’ve gone from skeptic to believer on more than one thing in my life — including the man in this story. If you enjoy following these threads where faith meets the headlines, here’s another one I think you’ll like: why I don’t think the aliens are coming.
